Qualcomm opens R&D Center in Hanoi, boosting Vietnam's semiconductor ecosystem

The official opening of Qualcomm's Research and Development (R&D) Center in Hanoi is expected to contribute to training internationally qualified engineers, enhancing innovation capabilities, and integrating Vietnam more deeply into the global technology value chain.

On May 12th, Qualcomm Technologies officially announced the opening of its R&D Center in Hanoi, marking a new milestone in the company's long-term investment commitment to Vietnam's rapidly developing technology ecosystem. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology (S&T), the US Embassy, ​​and industry partners and stakeholders.

Promoting global standard semiconductor technology innovation in Vietnam

Following the announcement of the establishment of an AI R&D center in 2025, the Hanoi R&D center has now officially commenced operations, serving multi-disciplinary innovation. In its initial phase, the center will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and system-on-chip (SoC) development, gradually expanding to strategic areas such as automotive technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other advanced technologies.

The center will contribute to strengthening Qualcomm Technologies’ global R&D network by leveraging Vietnam's rapidly growing technology workforce and fostering closer local partnerships.

Through this R&D center, Qualcomm aims to build a team of internationally qualified engineers in Vietnam, using semiconductor development as a foundation and expanding into the software field to support comprehensive technological innovation. Vietnamese engineers working at the center will directly participate in the design and development of cutting-edge technologies, enhancing Qualcomm's capabilities and collaborating closely with Qualcomm's global engineering teams.

Qualcomm Technologies’ investment in R&D is closely aligned with Vietnam’s priorities regarding digital transformation, AI applications, and advanced connectivity. With its leading position in 5G, cloud-to-edge AI, computing, and IoT, Qualcomm is driving secure, scalable, and energy-efficient solutions for various sectors such as smart cities, transportation, healthcare, and industrial automation.

The Deputy Minister also acknowledged Qualcomm's practical contributions to Vietnam over the past years, especially strategic collaborations in the fields of 5G, AI, and support for Vietnam's technology ecosystem, from startups to leading corporations.

Qualcomm affirms long-term investment commitment

Dr. Baaziz Achour, Executive Vice President (EVP) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Qualcomm Technologies, emphasized: “The official opening of the R&D Center in Hanoi reaffirms Qualcomm’s long-term investment commitment in Vietnam and our belief in the country’s increasingly important role in the global technology landscape. By strengthening our local engineering presence, we are accelerating innovation and connecting Qualcomm’s global technologies with development opportunities in the local market”.

Mr. ST Liew, Vice President of Qualcomm Technologies and President of Qualcomm Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, under Qualcomm CDMA Technologies Asia-Pacific Pte. Ltd. Qualcomm shared: “This center opens up opportunities for Qualcomm to foster closer collaboration with local human resources, while connecting with domestic training and research institutions and partners in the ecosystem to promote practical innovations. We are committed to accompanying Vietnam on its journey to realize the goal of enhancing the country's position in the global value chain through technology and innovation”.

Besides promoting innovation within businesses, the R&D center in Hanoi is expected to play a key role in strengthening the increasingly expanding technology ecosystem in Vietnam. Qualcomm Technologies will continue to collaborate with leading universities through research programs and initiatives such as the Qualcomm AI Residency Program.

At the same time, the company will support startups, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and system integrators in developing globally competitive solutions based on Qualcomm Technologies' technology platform.

Over time, the Hanoi R&D Center is expected to contribute to Vietnam's innovation ecosystem by supporting the development of a future-ready technology workforce and enhancing local innovation capabilities.

Qualcomm Technologies will continue to collaborate with universities and training institutions to build a workforce that meets the nation’s priority requirements.

The Center will also serve as a platform to attract and develop high-quality human resources in the semiconductor and software engineering fields, contributing to the training of a globally-standardized R&D team in Vietnam.

Through developing advanced R&D capabilities right here in Vietnam, Qualcomm Technologies aims to contribute to the nation's transition towards an innovation-driven economy and higher value-added technologies. Simultaneously, the technology solutions developed in Vietnam will serve both domestic and international markets./.
